ManilART 2012 – Asia's Hottest Contemporary Art Fair

ManilART 2012 was held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, the country's largest venue for key industry events. It started with an exclusive Gala Night on October 2, 2012. ManilART then opened its doors to the general public from 10 am until 8 pm daily, for the next 4 days (October 3 through 6).There were around 11,000 visitors, more than 40 participating galleries, 500 artists featured, and about 1,400 works at last year's show.

In the run up to ManilART 2012, BAGO and NCCA hosted a press conference presided over by a panel of distinguished artists and experts, including Ildefonso Santos, National Artist for Architecture, Eddie Romero, National Artist for Cinema, the renowned sculptor Ramon Orlina, then Congressman, now Senator Sonny Angara, Silvana Diaz of Galeria Duemila, Amy Loste of Gallery Nine, and Jack Teotico of Contemporary Arts Philippines Magazine.

At the fair proper, the major activities included:

  • Preventive Conservation Lecture
    Art dealers and art collectors flocked to this lecture to learn more about the ways in which they can minimize the deterioration of artworks due to humidity and handling.

  • Copyright Law Lecture
    Art enthusiasts gathered for an afternoon of learning regarding the guidelines and laws that protect the works and rights of our country's artists.

  • Art Appreciation Walking Tour
    Bloggers, students, and art enthusiasts were treated to a 2-hour walking tour, meandering through the aisles of galleries. The interactive tour allowed the attendees to take pictures and ask questions, which further enhanced their experience.

  • International Night
    Members of the diplomatic and expat community trooped to ManilART for an evening of wine, music, and art, giving the art fair an international stamp of approval.

  • Jeepney Art Festival
    ManilART joined forces with this organization to celebrate one of the iconic and colorful symbols of our nation.

  • Derwent Workshop
    Derwent, the leading brand for prime art materials, engaged students at the elementary level to come up with their own dazzling works of art, giving them the avenue of self expression.

  • Partner Charities
    ManilART 2012 featured two partner charities: Operation Smile and Isang Litrong Liwanag. Celebrating its 30th year in the Philippines, Operation Smile is a foundation that helps change the lives of children afflicted with cleft palate. Meanwhile, Isang Litrong Liwanag operates under the My Shelter Foundation, which aims to improve the lives of urban settlers by installing PET solar bottles to create ample daylight lighting, particularly inside their dark shanties.
